January 12, 2026Historical Walk in Trikala: Memory, City, Learning
The Development Center of Thessaly (AKETH), in collaboration with the Directorate of Primary Education of Trikala, implemented an experiential historical walk in the city of Trikala, as part of the annual celebrations of the Anniversary of the NO and the liberation of the city from the occupying forces (October 18, 1944). The walk was attended by Principals of Primary Schools and Kindergartens of the Municipality of Trikala.
The tour was carried out by teachers Mr. Dimitrios Konstantinidis and Mr. Costas Michalakis, who guided the participants to important historical points of the city, presenting documented testimonies and events of the period of Occupation and Liberation.
The action utilized ICT tools, with an interactive map –designed and developed by the Athens Institute of History and Culture– where at each point of interest the participants had access to period photographic material relevant to the point in question. It is the first application of an experiential model that transforms the city into a “living learning laboratory” and connects the teaching of Local History with the active, living experience of the space.
The initiative has particular weight, as it is directly linked to the inclusion of the Local History course in the curricula of Primary Schools, providing the Principals with practical support for the planning of relevant actions in the school units.
